Warrington

Jarrett Banks sat at the grand circular table in the huge kitchen of Tomas Molnar’s house. Tomas’s brother, Matej, was there, as were several other men who worked for Jarrett and the Molnar brothers. Tomas’s wife, Maria, came in to fetch something from the sink. She was slender, with long dark hair almost to the curve of her lower back. In normal circumstances she would have caught the attention of most men, but the Molnar brothers’ gang never allowed their eyes to wander. Jarrett noticed tears in her eyes as she turned and left the kitchen.

‘What does the note say?’ asked Jarrett.

‘Here, fucking read it!’ Tomas stabbed his chunky fingers on the paper and slid it across.

Jarrett calmly picked it up and read it. The letter was short and straight to the point. ‘So, they want us to stop selling drugs in Warrington. And . . . if we don’t, the girls will die?’

Tomas couldn’t speak, he was so furious. His face turned red, bordering on purple. His thick, boulder-like shoulders swiftly rose and dipped with his quick breathing.

‘These stupid notes, every few days there’s a new one. “Stop selling on the east side, do this deal — or else.” Is it ever going to end? This has been going on for a month.’ Matej stood up and sighed heavily. ‘They killed Hendo, kidnapped the girls . . . and it’s all been leading to this. Stop selling in Warrington? I can’t wait to find these fuckers!’ He pressed his palms on the table. He was thinner than Tomas, with short-cropped hair, whereas Tomas was bald. If anything, Matej was more dangerous than his brother, often acting under rage-fuelled impulses rather than being methodical. ‘Whoever the fuck this is wants Warrington for themselves.’

‘I promise you, whoever is responsible for this will suffer an excruciating death.’ Tomas spoke with quiet fury. They all knew what the Molnar brothers could do.

‘Has it really been a month?’ Jarrett put the letter down. ‘And still no witnesses to the kidnapping, Hendo’s killing?’

Tomas scowled. ‘If anyone had seen anything, I would have beaten it out of them.’

Jarrett edged back, curling his lip. ‘No CCTV anywhere?’

The scowl on Tomas’s face deepened. ‘I’ve checked everything.’

Jarrett made a ‘fair enough’ face. ‘Do we know if the girls are still okay?’

Tomas slowly pulled a photo from his pocket and showed Jarrett. It was of Nina, Luna, and Anya, standing in a field, unaware the photo had been taken. The sun was shining on their faces.

‘When was this taken?’ asked Jarrett.

‘It came with that letter in the post.’

‘What’s the plan, then?’

Matej moved back a few inches from the table and crossed his thick, muscular arms. ‘I love making money, but I love my nieces more.’ He turned to Tomas. ‘We have to stop selling in Warrington.’

Tomas considered this. Jarrett knew he was thinking about the astronomical profits from the drug game, the flashy lifestyle they funded. He dropped his face into his palms. ‘Okay. Text the number, tell them we’ve knocked the Warrington game on the head and pulled our lads back.
